|Liberty Ball 2016 - The Dami Schertzer Family|
December 7th is known by many as the day of the Pearl Harbor attack. To the Schertzer family, December 7th is known for a different type of ‘bomb’ - - the day Damiana ‘Dami’ was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The family now calls this day ‘Tea Dami Day’.
Immediately after her diagnoses, Dami and her family were instructed to go to the Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey to seek treatment. Once there, a team of doctors set forth a plan and Dami underwent a arduous 8-hour tumor resection surgery. For most, coming out of a surgery like this would not be easy but for Dami, with her fighting spirit, she was smiling within minutes of coming out of anesthesia. Dami has had to use that same fighting spirit to overcome many hurdles in her recovery. Throughout her journey, she's faced other diagnosis after her initial cancer diagnosis, including Fourth Nerve Palsy, Epilepsy, SVT, POTS, Hydrocephalus, Syncope, Dysautonomia, Thyroid Abnormity, Vocal Chord Disfunction, Benign Joint Hypermobility and more.
With each scary diagnosis, countless amount of blood work, various procedures and surgeries, Damiana has always handled herself with grace. Being able to rely on the support from staff at the Hershey Medical Center has truly helped Dami and her family overcome each trial. While she's still young, Dami rarely asks why or feels sorry for herself. She is a great source of strength and inspiration for all around her.
Join us at the Liberty Ball to hear Mr. & Mrs. Schertzer, Dami’s parents, share more about her story and how they were able to benefit from donations made to THON to support Four Diamonds at the Hershey Medical Center. You will not want to miss this!
